TikTok username ideas, with a free generator that checks TikTok's rules

A username is the one part of a TikTok profile you can only change once every 30 days, and changing it changes your profile link. Type a name and a topic below for handle ideas that already pass TikTok’s character rules, then check your own nickname and bio against their limits.

What makes a good TikTok username?

A TikTok username must be 2 to 24 characters of letters, numbers, underscores and periods, cannot end in a period, and can be changed only once every 30 days, so a good one is short enough to say aloud and broad enough to keep. Your name plus your topic, such as @maya.baking, does both.

The username is only the @tag in your profile link. The name people see on posts and comments is the nickname: up to 30 characters, with no character rule stated beyond the Community Guidelines, changeable every 7 days. Put the detail there, and keep the username plain. TikTok's help pages were checked on 21 October 2026.

Check your own

What this does: it combines your words with fixed patterns and applies TikTok's stated rules, in your browser. TikTok's page says “letters” without listing which, so the checker accepts A to Z only. It is not AI, it sends nothing anywhere, and it cannot tell whether a username is already taken; only TikTok's Edit profile screen can.

Username, nickname and bio: what are TikTok’s limits?

TikTok’s published limits for the three profile text fields

TikTok's limits for username, nickname and bioThree bars on one character scale: the username holds 2 to 24 characters and can change every 30 days, the nickname up to 30 characters and can change every 7 days, the bio up to 80 characters. The three fields from TikTok’s help pages, drawn to the same scale so the difference is visible: the username is the shortest and the slowest to change. The bottom row is what the generator above checks every idea against.

The limits decide the order to fill them in. Settle the username first, because it is the slowest to undo. Then use the nickname for the words that do not fit the username's rules, and the bio for what a stranger gets by following.

Username ideas for five niches

Each column is one of the generator's patterns, filled with a first name and a topic. Swap in your own name; the topic word does most of the work, because it tells a stranger what the account is for before they open a video.

Example TikTok usernames from three of the generator’s patterns
NicheName, period, topicTopic then nameTopic, underscore, notes
Home cooking@sam.cooking@cookingwithsam@cooking_notes
Fitness@lea.kettlebells@kettlebellswithlea@kettlebells_notes
Personal finance@ravi.budgeting@budgetingwithravi@budgeting_notes
Skincare@noor.skincare@skincarewithnoor@skincare_notes
Small business@tom.candles@candleswithtom@candles_notes

Each handle above is 18 characters or fewer, inside the 24 TikTok allows. None uses a string of numbers, which reads as a placeholder, and none ends in a period, which TikTok rejects. Whether any is free is something only TikTok can tell you.

Does your TikTok username affect views?

Not by anything TikTok publishes. Its list of what shapes the For You feed covers viewer interactions, details of the video such as sounds and hashtags, and the viewer's settings; the creator's username is not on it. For search, TikTok weighs how well the content matches the words typed. The phrase belongs in the caption and on screen, as the TikTok SEO guide lays out.

What a username does affect is the profile link. TikTok says changing the username changes the link, so anywhere you shared the old one needs updating. For a new account with no followers, the first videos matter far more than the handle, and the video ideas page is the better place to spend the next hour.

Why can’t you change your TikTok username?

Usually because of one of the rules on TikTok's help page: the username was changed less than 30 days ago, the new one is unavailable because it is taken or held by a suspended or deactivated account, it breaks a character rule, or the account is blocked from updating its profile. A username someone just gave up also stays unavailable for a short period.

To check the last case, open TikTok Studio and tap Account check under More tools; it shows any restriction on profile editing. The checker above covers the character rules.

How do you change your TikTok username?

  1. In the TikTok app, tap Profile at the bottom.
  2. Tap Edit profile.
  3. Tap Username and type the new one.
  4. Tap Save.

You can then change it again only after 30 days, and a username you give up cannot be added to an account for a short period, so do not plan to switch back within the month.

Username questions

Can a TikTok username have spaces?

No. A username can contain only letters, numbers, underscores and periods. A name with spaces belongs in the nickname, the name people see on your posts and comments, which TikTok limits to 30 characters and the Community Guidelines.

How long can a TikTok bio be?

80 characters, according to TikTok’s help page. That is room for one sentence about what you post and one about when, which is usually more useful to a new viewer than a list of interests.

What is the difference between a TikTok name and username?

The username is the @tag that makes up your profile link, 2 to 24 characters, changeable once every 30 days. The name, which TikTok calls the nickname, is the display name shown across the app, up to 30 characters, changeable once every 7 days.
