Hook writing questions
How do I write a hook for TikTok?
Start inside the action, make one specific promise, and deliver the first word before the first second is over. Pick one of the six types above, write five versions, record the two that read best out loud, and score both recordings with the hook score to choose.
How long should a TikTok hook be?
One spoken sentence of six to twelve words, delivered inside the first two to three seconds. On-screen text should be shorter still, six words or fewer, so it can be read at a glance while the sentence is being spoken.
Should the hook be text on screen or spoken?
Both, and they should not be identical. Speak the full line and put the sharpest three to six words of it on screen. A large share of viewers watch with sound off for the first second, and the text carries them to the moment the audio catches up.
Can I use the same hook on Reels and Shorts?
Usually yes. The hook types work across all three platforms. The one adjustment is that a Shorts title and description are read by search, so a hook with a searchable phrase in it does more work there than on TikTok.
