TikTok shadowban: what TikTok calls it and where to check

Shadowban is the creators’ word. TikTok’s help pages say “ineligible for recommendation” and name the screens where it shows up. This guide covers the two places to look, what each finding means, both appeal routes, and a five-minute check run on one account’s last five videos.

What is a shadowban on TikTok?

A TikTok shadowban is what creators call being “ineligible for recommendation”, and TikTok’s help pages, checked on 20 October 2026, say it shows up in 2 places: a notification in Inbox and a notice below the username on the profile. In TikTok’s description, an account that repeatedly posts content unsuitable for For You will not appear there and will be harder to find in search.

A separate screen, Account check under More tools in TikTok Studio, covers 5 areas: login, posts, comments, profile editing and direct messages. Each carries a checkmark when there is no issue and a warning sign when there is one. No notice, nothing in Inbox and five checkmarks mean TikTok reports no restriction. Look at the videos next.

TikTok’s term is “ineligible for recommendation”

TikTok’s help page on accounts that are not being recommended describes two levels. At the first, TikTok may keep a single unsuitable video out of For You. At the second, an account that keeps posting such videos drops out of For You altogether and gets harder to find in TikTok search.

What counts as unsuitable is set by the For You feed eligibility standards, a part of TikTok’s Community Guidelines. The standards are public. Read the section that matches the flagged video before you appeal, so the appeal is about the rule and not about the view count. What the For You page is and what else decides whether a video reaches it is covered in the FYP guide.

Instagram runs the same idea under the name Account Status. If you post the same clips there, the guide to Instagram Reels that are not getting views shows where professional accounts find it and what an edit, removal or appeal does on that side.

Account check and the notice under your username are the two places to look

Two checks that separate a restriction from a video problemCheck Account check in TikTok Studio and look for an Ineligible for recommendation notice under your username. A warning or the notice means a restriction to fix or appeal; a checkmark and no notice means the videos are the problem.1. Account checkTikTok Studio, More tools2. Under your usernameIneligible notice? Inbox?Warning signA restriction: read the reasonNotice shownAppeal from Inbox or profileCheckmark and no noticeNot a restriction: fix the opening and the edit
Both checks come from TikTok's help pages. Account check (TikTok Studio, More tools) shows a checkmark or a warning sign for posting, commenting, messaging, profile editing and login. The Ineligible for recommendation notice appears under the username and in Inbox, and opens the appeal.

Open Account check first, then your profile. Account check opens two ways:

  • Profile, Menu, TikTok Studio, then Account check under More tools.
  • Profile, Menu, Settings and privacy, Support, Safety Center, then Account check.

A checkmark beside an item means no issue; a warning sign means TikTok has found one. The For You question lives on the profile instead: TikTok shows an “Ineligible for recommendation” notice directly below the username and sends a notification to Inbox.

The two screens answer different questions. Account check covers what you can do on TikTok: log in, post, comment, edit the profile, send messages. The notice covers whether TikTok recommends what you post. A clean Account check says nothing about the notice, so read both.

Each of five findings has one next step

Find the row that matches your screen. The last column is the next step.

What you see in TikTok, what it means and what to do next
What you seeWhat it meansWhat to do
No notice, a checkmark on all five Account check items, low viewsNo restriction reported. A performance problem with the videos.Work on the videos themselves, starting with the opening seconds.
An “Ineligible for recommendation” notice below your usernameThe account has repeatedly posted content unsuitable for For You. Its posts are out of For You and harder to find in search.Review the videos TikTok lists, then appeal from Inbox or from the notice.
An Inbox notification about one video, no notice on the profileThat video may be kept out of For You. Without the profile notice, the account is not marked ineligible.Appeal that video if you think the call is wrong; if it is right, leave that element out of the next post.
A warning sign in Account check beside posts or commentsA restriction on posting or commenting.Read what Account check lists against the warning before you post or comment again.
No data or N/A in Analytics for a recent videoNot a restriction. Data needs about 1 to 2 days to update, and videos posted before Analytics was turned on never get any.Wait 2 days before reading it, and leave older videos out of the comparison.

Two rows need no appeal. Row five is a gap in reporting. In row one the work moves to the clips, and why a TikTok is not getting views sorts the video-side causes by symptom, from 0 views after an hour to a sudden drop after a good run.

How do I appeal ineligible for recommendation on TikTok?

Appeal from either place TikTok notified you. Both routes end on Appeal.

From Inbox

  1. Open Inbox.
  2. Tap the notification.
  3. Tap View more.
  4. Review the videos.
  5. Tap Appeal.

From your profile

  1. Open Profile.
  2. Tap the “Ineligible for recommendation” notice.
  3. Review the videos.
  4. Tap Appeal.

Appealing is optional. TikTok says it may restore good standing on its own, depending on how much of the account’s content is unsuitable for For You, and it gives no timeline for that. If you think the videos meet the For You feed eligibility standards, appeal now. If they do not, posting more of the same only adds to the content TikTok counts as unsuitable.

A five-minute check separates an account problem from a video problem

Order matters. Each step rules one thing out before the next.

  1. Account check. Open it from TikTok Studio under More tools and scan the five items for a warning sign.
  2. Your username. Open your profile and look directly below the username for the “Ineligible for recommendation” notice.
  3. Inbox. Read the notifications from TikTok for anything about a video or the account.
  4. Analytics. In TikTok Studio, open Analytics in the Posts tab and note the For You share under traffic sources for your last five videos. Skip anything posted in the last 2 days.
  5. Decide. A warning or a notice sends you to the table and the appeal steps. A clean result sends you to the videos.

The 2-day skip in step 4 comes from TikTok: analytics data needs about 1 to 2 days to update, and every figure except Follower activity is dated in UTC. Allow for that when you match a drop to an Inbox notification: a video posted at 6 p.m. in Los Angeles in October (UTC−7) is already 01:00 UTC the next day.

Here is step 4 on a cooking account whose last five videos, oldest first, drew 1,200, 1,050, 1,400, 310 and 280 views. The For You shares were 70%, 66%, 72%, 8% and 6%. Multiply views by the share to get For You views: 1,400 × 0.72 = 1,008 for the third video, and 310 × 0.08 = about 25 for the fourth.

For You views fell from 1,008 to about 25 in one post. Line that drop up against Inbox: a notification dated between videos three and four, plus the notice under the username, makes it row two of the table. Had all five held near 70% For You while views sank to 300, TikTok would still have been showing them in For You, and the problem would sit in the clips.

The guide to TikTok Analytics shows where traffic sources and the other post numbers live on phone and on desktop.

Go Viral helps once the check comes back clean

Go Viral cannot see your account status. It does not connect to TikTok; it works on the clip you import or the TikTok link you paste. So it belongs after the five-minute check comes back clean, when the question has moved from the account to the videos.

The app reads the clip. Hook Score rates the first 3 seconds from 0 to 100, the part of the video a For You viewer meets first. The Engagement Heat Map marks drop-offs, replays and retention trends across the clip, so you can see which second loses people. Run both on the weakest of your last five videos, then on the draft of the next one.

Shadowban questions

How do I know if I am shadowbanned on TikTok?

Look in two places. Account check, under More tools in TikTok Studio, marks login, posts, comments, profile editing and direct messages with a checkmark or a warning sign. When the account is out of For You, the profile shows an “Ineligible for recommendation” notice below the username and TikTok sends an Inbox notification. Five checkmarks, no notice and an empty Inbox point to the videos.

How long does a TikTok shadowban last?

TikTok does not publish a duration. Its help page says good standing may come back automatically, depending on how much of the account’s content is unsuitable for For You. If that does not happen, the documented route is an appeal, started from the Inbox notification or from the notice below your username on the profile.

How do I fix a shadowban on TikTok?

Appeal it. Open Inbox, tap the notification, tap View more, review the videos and tap Appeal. Or open your profile, tap the “Ineligible for recommendation” notice, review the videos and tap Appeal. If the flagged videos do break the For You feed eligibility standards, stop posting that kind of video while you wait for automatic restoration.

Does deleting videos remove a shadowban?

TikTok does not say so. Its help page ties automatic restoration to how much content on the account is unsuitable for For You, and it does not describe deleting videos as a reset. The route TikTok documents is the appeal, from Inbox or from the notice under your username, so start there before you remove anything.

Clean check, low views: read the clip

Import the video or paste its TikTok link. Hook Score rates the first 3 seconds from 0 to 100, and the Engagement Heat Map shows where viewers drop off or replay.
