Engagement Rate

Instagram engagement rate calculator for Reels

Instagram does not print an engagement rate on a Reel. It prints the parts: views, viewers, likes, comments, shares and saves. The calculator turns them into the rates worth comparing, including the two Instagram itself told creators to watch.

How do you calculate engagement rate on Instagram Reels?

To calculate an Instagram Reel's engagement rate, add its likes, comments, shares and saves and divide by its viewers, the unique accounts that saw it; in the example below that is 885 ÷ 8,400 = 10.54%. Rival IQ's 2025 benchmark report calls engagement divided by unique reach the truest measure, and Viewers is the closest number to unique reach in Instagram's Reel insights.

Likes, comments and shares divided by followers give the per-follower rate, 24.84% here, which is the number to hold against outside benchmarks such as Rival IQ's 0.36% median. Beside both, check likes per reach and sends per reach, the two ratios Instagram's Adam Mosseri named in January 2025 along with watch time.

Instagram Reels engagement rate calculator

Copy the numbers from one Reel: Reels tab, the Reel, View insights, and its likes, comments, shares and saves. Viewers, Instagram's count of unique accounts that saw it, is the closest Insights number to reach, so every per-reach rate below divides by it. Leave followers at zero to skip the follower-based numbers.

What this does: it divides the numbers you type, in your browser, and sends nothing anywhere. It cannot see your account, and Instagram marks Viewers as an estimated metric, so the per-reach rates are estimates too.

Which Insights numbers go into the calculator?

Open the Reels tab on your profile, tap the Reel, then View insights. Instagram's help page defines the numbers below; its list of Reel insights does not include likes, comments, shares or saves, so take those from the Reel's own counts.

Why divide by viewers instead of followers?

Because a Reel can be shown to people who do not follow you, and the follower count stays the same whoever watches. In the example, 8,400 viewers against 3,100 followers is 2.71 viewers per follower, so a rate over followers comes out more than twice the rate over viewers even after leaving saves out.

One Reel's engagement per viewer and per followerPer viewer: 885 interactions divided by 8,400 viewers is 10.54%. Per follower: 770 interactions divided by 3,100 followers is 24.84%. The two rates from the worked example, with the bars drawn to the size of each denominator. The Reel reached more people than follow the account, so the smaller denominator gives the higher rate even though the follower rate leaves out saves, as Rival IQ’s definition does. The higher number says more about reach than about the Reel.

It also explains why the example's 24.84% sits so far above Rival IQ's 0.36%: that median comes from brand accounts with more than 5,000 followers and all post types, while this example is a single Reel from a 3,100-follower account that reached past its followers. Rival IQ makes the same point about its own method: it divides by followers only because platform APIs do not give it reach. You have reach, so use it to judge a Reel, and keep the follower rate for comparisons with published benchmarks. The TikTok engagement rate calculator makes the same split with views, because TikTok shows views rather than unique viewers.

Likes per reach and sends per reach: the ratios Instagram named

In January 2025 Adam Mosseri told creators to watch three numbers: watch time, likes per reach and sends per reach. He added that likes count slightly more with followers and sends slightly more with people who do not follow you. The help page's list of Reel insights has no separate send count, so the share count on the Reel is the closest number you can read.

  1. Likes per reach: 640 ÷ 8,400 = 7.62%.
  2. Shares per reach: 92 ÷ 8,400 = 1.10%.
  3. Views per viewer: 12,600 ÷ 8,400 = 1.50, so some viewers played it more than once.

Compare each ratio with your own last ten Reels, not with another account. A Reel with a high like rate and a low share rate pleased the people who saw it without giving them a reason to send it on, which is the gap the Reels checklist works on. If viewers stopped at your followers, start with the Reels views diagnosis.

Instagram engagement questions

What is a good engagement rate on Instagram Reels?

One above your own median, worked out the same way across your last ten Reels. The outside reference is Rival IQ’s 2025 median of 0.36% per post by follower, across all post types, measured on brand accounts with more than 5,000 Instagram followers. It divides likes, comments and shares by followers, so compare it with your per-follower rate, never with the per-viewer rate.

How do you calculate engagement rate on Instagram?

Per viewer, add likes, comments, shares and saves and divide by viewers: 885 ÷ 8,400 = 10.54% in the example. Per follower, Rival IQ’s way, add likes, comments and shares and divide by followers: 770 ÷ 3,100 = 24.84%. Take every number from the same Reel on the same day.

Why is my Instagram engagement rate over 100%?

You divided by followers and the Reel reached many people who do not follow you. Their likes, comments and shares count in the top of the fraction while the bottom stays at your follower count. Divide by viewers instead: the bottom then grows with the audience, so reach stops inflating the rate.

Does Instagram show engagement rate in Insights?

Not in the list of Reel insights on Instagram’s help page, which names views, watch time, viewers, average watch time and follows. Likes, comments, shares and saves sit on the Reel itself, so the rate is yours to work out, which is what the calculator does.
