Can you monetize Instagram Reels? How Instagram pays creators for Reels
Yes, though not the way TikTok or YouTube Shorts pay. The Instagram help pages cited here describe no rate per view. What they describe is a short list of tools, each with its own requirements, and one of them, Gifts, lives on the Reel itself.
You can monetize Instagram Reels through Gifts, which Instagram's help page, checked on 21 October 2026, says pay creators $0.01 for every Star viewers send on a Reel, once the account has at least 500 followers. None of the Instagram help pages cited here describes a payment per Reel view.
Instagram lists five monetization tools in all: Gifts on Reels, Subscriptions from 10,000 followers, badges on live video, bonuses offered by invitation only, and Creator Marketplace. Every tool requires compliance with Instagram's Partner Monetization Policies. Gifts, Subscriptions and bonuses need a professional account and an eligible country, and Gifts and Subscriptions also need age 18 or over.
Instagram Gifts calculator
Instagram's help page pays creators $0.01 for every Star received in gifts on reels, monthly. Type the Stars from your Professional Dashboard, or a target in dollars.
You receive
$10.00
1,000 Stars × $0.01
Stars needed for the target
10,000
target ÷ $0.01, rounded up
What this does: it multiplies, in your browser, and sends nothing anywhere. It cannot see your gifts, and it does not show what viewers paid for their Stars, which depends on the pack size and the app store's fee.

The two follower minimums on Instagram’s help pages, checked on 21 October 2026, on a log scale. Both also need a professional account, age 18 or over and an eligible country. Bonuses sit off the scale: they are invitation-only tests with no published follower count.
Gifts are not open to every Reel even on an eligible account: Instagram excludes collaborative posts and accounts that mainly post content focused on children. Without a payout account a creator can see who sent a gift but cannot receive the money.
How do you monetize Instagram Reels, step by step?
Switch to a professional account; Gifts, Subscriptions and bonuses all need one.
Check the Gifts bar: 18 or over, at least 500 followers, and a country on Instagram's Gifts list, which includes the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and India.
Agree to the Instagram Gifts Creator Terms.
Set up a payout account. Without one, Instagram shows who sent a gift but pays nothing for it.
At 10,000 followers, open the Professional dashboard; eligible accounts see Set up subscriptions there.
Keep an eye on the same dashboard for a bonus invitation, and ignore any that asks for your password.
How much do Instagram Gifts pay?
A flat $0.01 for each Star, paid monthly, so 1,000 Stars are $10.00 to the creator. The calculator's default works it through: 1,000 Stars × $0.01 = $10.00, and a $100 month takes $100 ÷ $0.01 = 10,000 Stars. The approximate total since your last payout is under Professional Dashboard, Your Tools, Gifts.
The viewer pays more than the creator receives. Instagram takes its share when Stars are bought, and that share varies with the size of the pack; Apple or Google also takes an in-app purchase fee, which Instagram's page says is typically 30%. Gifts on Instagram are separate from Facebook Stars on Reels, and Instagram says a Facebook Stars balance cannot be used to send gifts on Instagram.
Are Instagram Reels bonuses still available?
Only as tests. Instagram's bonuses page says programs are offered by invitation, for a limited time and in some countries, with an element of random selection, and that Instagram may end them; it says it will announce when public eligibility opens. Check the professional dashboard for an invitation; Instagram may also confirm one by app notification or by email from Meta.
The same page warns that authentic invitations never ask for your username or password. A message that offers a Reels bonus in exchange for a login is not from Instagram.
How does this compare with TikTok and YouTube Shorts?
The other two pay on views. YouTube shares a pool of Shorts Feed ad revenue by engaged views and creators keep 45%; the Shorts monetization page reruns YouTube's own example. TikTok's Creator Rewards pays on qualified views from videos at least a minute long; the Creator Rewards guide has its calculator. On Instagram, Gifts earnings depend on how many Stars viewers choose to send, which no published formula predicts. Reach is the precondition either way, and the Reels checklist covers what Instagram says it ranks Reels on.
Reels monetization questions
How many followers do you need to monetize Instagram Reels?
▼
500 for Gifts on Reels, the tool built into Reels, and 10,000 for Subscriptions, according to Instagram’s help pages. Both also need a professional account, age 18 or over and an eligible country. Bonuses publish no follower count; they are invitation-only tests.
Does Instagram pay for Reels views?
▼
Not by any program on the Instagram help pages cited here. Gifts pay per Star a viewer sends, Subscriptions let creators monetize video and audio content, and bonuses are invitation-only tests. None of the pages cited describes a payment per Reel view.
How much is 1,000 Stars on Instagram?
▼
$10.00 to the creator. Instagram’s Gifts page pays $0.01 for every Star received, monthly. What the viewer paid for those Stars is higher and varies, because Instagram takes a share at purchase that depends on the pack size, and the app store takes its own fee, typically 30%.
Why can’t I get gifts on my Reels?
▼
Check the cases Instagram lists. The account needs to be professional, the creator 18 or over with at least 500 followers in an eligible country, the Gifts terms accepted and a payout account set up. Collaborative posts and accounts that mainly post content focused on children are not eligible.
