TikTok FYP: what the For You page is, why it changes, and how videos get on it

The FYP is two different problems depending on which side of the screen you are on. As a viewer you want it to stop showing the wrong things; as a creator you want your video in other people’s. TikTok’s help pages, checked on 21 October 2026, cover both, and this guide takes them in that order.

What is the FYP on TikTok?

The FYP, or For You page, is the personalized feed TikTok opens on, chosen from each viewer's interests and engagement. TikTok calls it the For You feed and, on help pages checked on 21 October 2026, says it reflects your interests more the more you use the app and stays unique to each person.

Viewers can steer it with four controls TikTok names: Not interested, Manage topics, Filter keywords and Refresh. A creator's video reaches other people's FYPs when it meets the For You eligibility standards and earns interactions, such as being watched in full rather than skipped, which TikTok weights most for most users.

Why is my TikTok FYP suddenly different?

Three things TikTok describes can make a feed shift without you changing anything on purpose.

  1. Your own recent behaviour. Every like, comment, share, full watch and skip is a signal for the next recommendations. A week of watching one topic all the way through can crowd out the others.
  2. Deliberate variety. TikTok says it introduces new creators and content to diversify the feed, so some posts will look unrelated to anything you have shown interest in.
  3. A recent refresh. After a refresh TikTok shows popular content first and rebuilds from your reactions, so the feed looks generic for a while.

To see the reasons TikTok gives for a particular post, tap Share, then Why this post. The reasons it lists are about engagement, popularity, recency, length and who you follow, and they are worth reading as a creator too, as the table further down shows. In the EEA, the UK and Switzerland you can also turn personalized recommendations off in settings.

How do you reset your TikTok FYP?

TikTok gives two routes to Refresh your For You feed, and neither can be undone. Its two help pages label the explanation screen differently, Why this post on one and Why this video on the other; both are reached from Share on a post.

  1. From settings: Profile, then the Menu button, Settings and privacy, Content Preferences, and Refresh your For You feed.
  2. From a post (in select regions): press and hold a post or tap Share, then Why this video, Adjust your For You, and Refresh your For You feed.
What happens when you refresh the For You feedFour boxes in a row: refresh, then TikTok shows popular posts, then your reactions to them, then a reshaped For You feed. Below, four parts of TikTok a refresh does not touch: the Following feed, your profile, your inbox and ads.RefreshSettings and privacy,Content Preferences→Popular postsTikTok shows contentpopular with others→Your reactionslikes, comments, watchesand skips→New For Yourecommendations reshapedfrom thoseNot affected by a refresh:Following feedProfileInboxAds
The sequence TikTok’s help page describes. A refresh does not hand you a finished new feed; it hands you popular posts and rebuilds from how you react to them, so what you watch, like and skip straight after a refresh is what the new feed is made of. It cannot be undone.

A refresh is the blunt option. If only one topic is wrong, Not interested on a few of its posts, a lower setting for it in Manage topics, or a word in Filter keywords removes it without throwing away the parts of the feed that work. Filter keywords also takes hashtags and applies to the Following feed as well as For You.

Is the TikTok FYP random?

No. TikTok says each of its recommender systems selects from a large collection of eligible content and ranks it by a prediction of how likely you are to be interested, built from your interactions, the posts' details and your settings. The part that can look random is the variety TikTok adds on purpose. How that prediction works, with TikTok's own worked example, is on the page on how TikTok uses AI.

How do you get your videos on the FYP?

From the creator's side, the Why this post screen is a list of what TikTok matches on. Each reason it gives a viewer points at something a creator controls, or does not.

Reasons TikTok gives on the Why this post screen, read from the creator’s side
Reason TikTok can show a viewerWhat it means for your video
You commented on, liked, shared or watched similar postsYour video is matched to people who engaged with similar posts, so a video that is clearly one kind of post has a clearer match
This post is popular in your countryPopularity in the viewer’s own country counts; the country a video was posted in is also listed as content information
This post was created recentlyBeing recent is a reason on its own, separate from popularity
This video is longer and you seem to enjoy longer videosLength is matched to viewers, not judged on its own; see the length guide
You are following this creatorThe one reason a new account cannot use yet

Two limits sit above all five. A video that does not meet the For You feed eligibility standards can be kept off the FYP and made harder to find in search, which is what creators call a shadowban; the shadowban guide shows where TikTok tells you. And for most users TikTok says interactions, which may include watch time, are generally weighted more heavily than the other factors, which makes the opening the first thing to fix. The hook score reads the first three seconds and the video length guide covers the longer-videos reason.

Does putting #fyp in a caption help?

No, not by any route TikTok describes. Hashtags are content information, which helps TikTok tell what a video is about, and #fyp says nothing about the subject. The 3 to 5 tags this site recommends are better spent on tags that name it; the hashtag page has a free sorter for building that set.

FYP questions

What does FYP mean on TikTok?

FYP stands for For You page, the feed TikTok opens on. TikTok’s help pages call it the For You feed: a personalized stream chosen from your interests and engagement, which is why two people’s FYPs rarely match.

Does refreshing my FYP delete anything?

No. TikTok says a refresh affects only the For You feed. Your Following feed, profile, inbox and ads stay as they were. What it does change is permanent: a refresh cannot be undone, so use Not interested and Manage topics first if the feed is only partly off.

Why does my FYP show the same videos?

TikTok says it typically does not recommend content you have already seen, so a feed that feels repetitive is usually showing new posts on the same few topics. Tap Not interested on the topic you are tired of, or lower it in Manage topics. If whole sections of the feed are stale, refresh it.

Can you see why a video is on your FYP?

Yes. Tap Share on the post, then Why this post. TikTok lists reasons such as similar posts you engaged with, the post being popular in your country, the post being recent, or a longer video for a viewer who seems to enjoy longer ones.

Give the first viewers a reason to finish

Score the first three seconds, find where the middle loses people on the heat map, and post the cut that is more likely to be watched through.
